Introduction to Barranquilla

Barranquilla is located on the Caribbean Coast with Cartagena to the West and Santa Marta to the East. Barranquilla is the fourth largest city in Colombia and was founded as a port city where the Magdalena River runs into the Atlantic Ocean. Barranquilla has a historic past and was the first port in Colombia and is home to the first Airport in South America. As a port city, Barranquilla has a more diverse population then many other Colombian cities and the people of Barranquilla are a mix of the indigenous population, the Spanish, African and the large influx of cultures during World War I and II. As a result, the people of Barranquilla can vary from brown skin and light eyes to white skin and black hair. The half Colombian, half Lebanese Pop Singer Shakira is a perfect example of the ethnic diversity you will find in Barranquilla. In-addition to Shakira, Barranquilla is also the home town for the baseball player Edgar Renteria, and Hollywood actress Sofia Vergara.

The people along the Caribbean Coast are referred to as Costenas and they will welcome you to their city!

Traveling to Barranquilla

Barranquilla is conveniently located to North America and is only a 2 hour flight from Miami. American Airlines has daily flights from Miami to the Ernesto Cortizzos International Airport. If you choose to fly into another Colombian city, there are regional airlines connecting all of the major cities. If you fly into or choose to visit Cartagena or Santa Marta, both are located 2 hours from Barranquilla and shuttle bus service can be arranged.

Barranquilla Carnival

Being a coastal city, the most popular activities in Barranquilla are Beach parties and Beach activities. But Barranquilla is best known for its Carnival (El Carnaval de Barranquilla). This is the most famous Carnival in Colombia and is the largest in South America, after the carnival in Rio. The Barranquilla Carnival has been proclaimed by UNESCO as one of the 28 "Masterpieces of the oral and intangible heritage of Humanity". The carnival is held 4 days before Ash Wednesday to 4 days afterwards. The carnival festivities are held in the city streets, but don’t worry, due to Barranquilla's warn weather, you won’t need a sweater! The Carnival is extremely popular, so make your reservations early!
