Short History of Manizales

Manizales is a city that you should check the weather before visiting!
Manizales was founded by a small group of ranchers who selected a high mountain plateau as the site of their new city. The plateau was selected due to it's cool climate and corresponding lack of mosquitoes!
The ranch lands and coffee plantations that surround Manizales are at lower and warmer elevations.

As you can see by the photos below, the original settlers built a cable car system to reach the mountain top quickly and easily! An original wooden tower is on display in the city central and the a short segment of the more modern steel tower system is also on display.

Nowadays Manizales is the main center for the production of Colombian coffee and is home to 6 colleges and universities. With 30,000 students, the new section of Manizales has the feel of an university town. Think Berkeley in the Andes!

Manizales is also located close to the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, which is clearly visible from most of the city.

Cultural Events

The Manizales Fair (Feria de Manizales) is the second biggest celebration in Colombia, after the Barranquilla Carnival. The Fair has a very Spanish flavor and begins with Bullfights and with a typical Spanish (Manolas) parade. The International Coffee Beauty Pageant is also a main event of the Fair.

Manizales is also home to the International Festival of Theater City of Manizales, which is one of the major theater events in Latin-America,and the Manizales Jazz Festival.

Women of Manizales (Paisas)

Due to its strong Spanish heritage, the women of Manizales generally look Spanish or European.
Due to the fact that Manizales is off the beaten track, it receives very few American tourist. As a result, you will find them (and the women from the surrounding cities) very open and interested in meeting foreign men.

Like all Colombian Women, they are looking for a faithful man for a serious relationship.
