MAP OF COLOMBIA Colombia is a republic consisting of thirty-two departments and the Capital District. Each department has a Governor and a Department Assembly who are elected by a popular vote for a four-year period. The governor cannot be re-elected consecutively. Departments are formed by a grouping of municipalities. Municipal government is composed by a mayor and a Municipal Council, both of them elected by the people for a four-year period. The Capital District is the country's capital, Bogotá.
